Often referred to as a con man, Jesse Duplantis is one of the earliest examples of television Christian evangelicalism and what is known as the “prosperity gospel”. In his church, Covenant Church, Duplantis preaches a message that emphasizes praying for a hefty income from God. If his personal life is any indication, it seems to have paid off. With a net worth that is estimated to be around $40 million, Duplantis lives rather large on the bounty provided by his church and his own business, Jesse Duplantis Ministries. Duplantis is a large supporter of Israel, as evidenced by his co-founding of the Christians United for Israel organization. Oral Roberts University awarded the pastor an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1999. Duplantis never achieved any formal divinity degrees, making the honorary doctorate the only degree he currently holds. Duplantis has been quoted as saying “If I give $1,000 dollars I deserve to get back $100,000 because I am just, that’s not greed!” in regard to tithing to the church. The “give more, get more” style of Christianity has been widely rejected by most denominations and Christian leaders.
