Famous jazz musician John Royce “Johnny” Mathis has over 350 million album sales under his belt. The 80-year-old musician was born in Texas into an extremely large family. The 4th of seven children, Mathis’ father was also a musician, working in vaudeville in California. Mathis began playing music on the piano at a very early age. This helped lead directly into his music career. Mathis landed a contract with Columbia Records in 1955 at the very young age of 19. His unique voice and talent with the piano helped land his music on the Billboard top 100 list. Mathis has 3 songs in the Grammy Hall of Fames: “It’s Not for Me to Say”, “Misty” and “Chances Are”.
