Bob Beckel has never been a politician. However, he’s spent most of his adult life involved in politics. He served in the State Department under Carter and eventually became the assistant Secretary of State. After unsuccessfully trying to help Walter Mondale become president, Beckel moved into political lobbying. Beckel’s became more widely known after joining the Fox News shove The Five, in which he provided a firebrand style of commentary and a distinctly liberal voice to the show. Beckel was also a columnist for USA Today for 10 years, and is currently a commentator and analyst for the 2016 presidential election with CNN. Beckel’s memoir, I Should Be Dead: My Life Surviving Politics, TV, and Addiction, highlights the alcohol addiction he has suffered in the past, and his road to recovery from alcoholism.
