Famous for role with foundational hip hop group N.W.A., Eazy-E built connections and wealth within in the industry before his untimely death in 1995. Born Eric Lynn Wright, Eazy-E spent his childhood in the rough neighborhoods of Compton, California. Compton is known for its gang violence, particularly between the notorious gangs the Bloods and the Crips. Although he dropped out of high school during his 9th grade year, Wright later earned his GED. As an adult, he found a lot of success outside of music–in the illegal drug trade. He earned as much as $250,000 through selling drugs, much of which went into helping to start his own record company, Ruthless Records. Wright lived a fairly promiscuous lifestyle, eventually fathering 10 children. He died in 1995 from an advanced case of AIDs. Many view Wright as one of the founders of rap, alongside artists Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. The recent Straight Outta Compton was dedicated to the rap artist, who is the only member of the original N.W.A. crew to have passed away.
