With perhaps one of the most interesting personal histories of any modern athlete, Kimbo Slice’s passing in June 2016 was a blow to the sports world. A popular MMA fighter, Slice came from a very humble background, rising out of relative obscurity thanks, in no small part, to YouTube. The fighter originally attended college to earn a degree in Criminal Justice. However, he dropped out of college before he was halfway finished. Instead, he worked as a bouncer at a strip club. That was until a close friend of his landed him a job as a limo driver and bodyguard for the organization behind pornography website Reality Kings. The moniker “Kimbo” was a childhood nickname. The name “Slice” was added on later in 2003, when a unsanctioned street match between Ferguson and another fighter landed on YouTube. There, fans of the fight nicknamed him “Slice” due to the injury he inflicted on the other fighter. Ferguson’s YouTube success helped land him in the ring professionally just 5 years later. Ferguson exploded onto the scene, winning his first two fights handily in the first round, in 1:19 and 19 seconds, respectively. Ferguson later took up professional boxing, where he remained undefeated across 7 fights, mostly with first-round knock-outs.
